Description
Enjoy the classic flavors of French onion soup in these irresistible bite-sized appetizers. Caramelized onions, melted Gruyère cheese, and crisp bread make these French Onion Soup Bites a mouthwatering crowd-pleaser.
Ingredients
– 1 large onion, thinly sliced
– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
– 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
– 2 cups beef broth
– 8 ounces Gruyère cheese, grated
– 12 slices baguette or French bread, 1/2-inch thick
Instructions
1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until deeply caramelized and golden brown.
2. Deglaze the pan with the balsamic vinegar and cook for 2-3 minutes, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
3. Add the beef broth and simmer for 5-7 minutes, until the liquid has reduced and thickened slightly.
4. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Arrange the bread slices on a baking sheet and toast for 3-5 minutes per side until lightly golden.
5. Top each toasted bread slice with a spoonful of the caramelized onion mixture and a sprinkle of grated Gruyère cheese.
6. Bake for 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
7. Serve the French Onion Soup Bites warm, garnished with a sprig of fresh thyme if desired.
Notes
For best results, use a high-quality beef broth to really enhance the flavor of the soup bites. You can also add a splash of sherry or brandy to the onion mixture for extra depth. These bites are best served immediately, but can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes if needed.
