Indulge in this quick and delicious twist on the classic French Croque Monsieur sandwich, featuring layers of savory ham, melted cheese, and toasted Italian bread.
Ingredients
– 8 slices Italian bread
– 8 slices prosciutto or ham
– 8 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
– 2 tablespoons butter
– 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
– 1 cup warm milk
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
1. 1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. 2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
3. 3. Gradually pour in the warm milk, whisking continuously, until the mixture thickens and becomes a smooth béchamel sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
4. 4. Place 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet. Top each slice with 2 slices of prosciutto or ham, and 2 slices of provolone or mozzarella cheese.
5. 5. Spread the béchamel sauce over the cheese, and top with the remaining 4 slices of bread.
6. 6. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown.
7. 7. Serve the Italian Croque Monsieur sandwiches immediately, while they’re hot and crispy.
Notes
For a crisper exterior, you can broil the sandwiches for 1-2 minutes after baking. Experiment with different cheese and meat combinations to find your favorite variation.
