Description
Stamppot is a beloved traditional Dutch dish that combines mashed potatoes with a variety of mix-ins, such as kale, sausage, and gravy. This easy, no-fail recipe delivers the authentic flavors of this comforting national dish in just 30 minutes.
Ingredients
– 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
– 1 cup whole milk
– 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
– 1 pound kale, stems removed and leaves chopped
– 1 pound Dutch smoked sausage, sliced
– 1/4 cup gravy (optional)
Instructions
1. In a large pot, cover the potato chunks with cold water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the potatoes are fork-tender.
2. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the milk, butter, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or ricer until smooth and creamy.
3. In a large skillet, sauté the chopped kale over medium heat until wilted, about 5 minutes. Add the sautéed kale to the mashed potatoes and stir to combine.
4. In the same skillet, cook the sliced sausage over medium heat until lightly browned, about 7-10 minutes.
5. Serve the stamppot with the cooked sausage on top. Drizzle with gravy, if desired.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use half-and-half or cream instead of milk. You can also experiment with different mix-ins, such as bacon, onions, or other vegetables.
